A royal garden beside the river
Bang Pa-In was a summer retreat for the kings of Thailand, set beside the Chao Phraya a little south of Ayutthaya. What most visitors remember is the mix: a Thai pavilion standing on the water in the middle of a pond, a Chinese-style hall, European-looking residences and a lookout tower, all spread across lawns and lakes joined by small bridges. It is a calm, open place to wander, and a real change from the busy temple ruins up the road. Give yourself time just to walk: the pleasure here is in the reflections on the water and the quiet between the buildings, not in ticking off sights.
It is still a royal property, so the visit comes with expectations. Modest dress is advised, which means shoulders and knees covered, and parts of the grounds can be closed for official occasions, so it is worth checking before you set out.
Pairing the palace with Ayutthaya
Because the palace sits so close to the old capital, many people treat the van Pattaya to Bang Pa-In Palace ride as the first or last stop of an Ayutthaya day. Start early, walk the gardens while it is still cool, then continue to the temple ruins for the afternoon — or the other way round. Plan on around three hours each way from Pattaya, depending on how Bangkok’s traffic behaves as you pass it. If the old capital is the main event, our Pattaya to Ayutthaya page explains how that day works.
- Leave Pattaya early — the gardens are mostly in the open and the midday sun is strong
- Wear comfortable shoes; the grounds are spread out
- Bring a hat, water and a layer that covers your shoulders
- Tell us every stop you want in advance, so the whole day can be priced in one go
Your price, set before the day starts
There is no standard published fare for this route, so the fixed price for your vehicle is confirmed in chat before the trip, with tolls and fuel included. A family or small group fits in the Toyota Commuter van, with nine seats and room for eight bags; couples can take a smaller car. If you are starting from a hotel in Bangkok rather than Pattaya, or want to finish the day there, tell us and we price that version instead. No deposit is needed, and you pay the driver in cash at the end.
You may want the driver to wait at the palace and carry on to Ayutthaya, or simply to bring you back to Pattaya the same evening. Waiting time, extra stops and the return are all priced in chat before you go. A Van Pattaya to Bang Pa-In Palace day planned this way has no surprises at the end — only a quiet drive home.
