Set the pickup by the train, not the clock
The whole point of Maeklong is a few minutes. Vendors in Samut Songkhram town sell fish, fruit and vegetables on mats and low tables placed right on the railway line. When the train approaches, awnings fold up, baskets slide back a few centimetres, and the train creeps through the market. Then everything goes back as if nothing happened. Arrive after it has passed and you will be looking at an ordinary market. Find a safe spot at the side, phone ready, and you get the picture everyone comes for.
The train only comes through a few times a day, and the timetable can change, so check the current times before you book and send us the one you want to see. We set the pickup from that, leaving room for traffic and a walk to a good spot along the tracks.
The drive around Bangkok's southern edge
Samut Songkhram lies south-west of Bangkok, near where the Mae Klong River meets the sea. From Pattaya the road skirts the capital's southern side, so plan on roughly three hours, sometimes more. A Van Pattaya to Maeklong Railway Market trip is a long day, and it is more comfortable when everyone has a proper seat and a place to put the bags of fruit you will buy.
- Check the current train times before you book, and plan for the earliest one that suits you
- When the train comes, step back from the rails and follow what the vendors do
- Bring a hat and small cash for snacks
- Keep a hand free; it is a working market and the lanes are narrow
The road home is the same distance in reverse, and after a morning on your feet in the heat, most people are glad of a long sit-down in the air-con. If you buy fresh fish or seafood at the market, ask the vendor to pack it well with ice for the ride.
Pairing it with a floating market
Very few people drive this far for the railway market alone. Amphawa Floating Market is close by in the same province, and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is across the border in Ratchaburi; both are common partners for Maeklong. Amphawa is known for its canal-side cafes and old wooden houses, Damnoen Saduak for canals crowded with boats selling food. Check the days and hours they run before you settle the plan, as they differ. You can put the stops together on our day trip planner and send it over, and we will tell you whether the order works with the train.
The fixed price for the whole vehicle, one way or as a full day with the driver waiting and taking you back to Pattaya, is confirmed in chat before the trip. Tolls and fuel are included, there is no deposit, and you pay the driver in cash at the end. For a group, the van Pattaya to Maeklong Railway Market means one meeting point all day and no one left on the wrong side of the tracks.
