Three reasons people make the long drive
Buriram is a province in the lower north-east, the region Thais call Isan, and for a long time it was off most visitors' maps. Three things changed that. Chang International Circuit hosts big motorsport weekends, including the Thai round of MotoGP. Chang Arena, next door, is the home ground of Buriram United, one of the most successful clubs in Thai football. And on an extinct volcano south of the town stands Phanom Rung, a sandstone Khmer temple that historians and photographers travel a long way to see, with the smaller Prasat Muang Tam nearby.
Whichever brings you, the van Pattaya to Buriram trip is one of the longer drives from the coast, and it is worth planning like one. Buriram town itself is relaxed and spread out, with hotels, local markets and Isan food, so a day or two there is easy to fill.
Breaking up a full day on the road
Plan on five to six hours of driving, more with traffic and the stops you will want. There is no fast way across: the route heads inland and north-east, through flat farmland once you leave the eastern seaboard behind. The good news is that Thai highways are lined with large fuel stations with toilets, coffee and food, so a break is never far away. Your driver stops whenever you ask.
- Leave early; arriving in daylight makes finding your hotel easier
- Ask to stop for a proper meal rather than snacking the whole way
- Pack phone chargers, a jacket for the air-con and something to sleep on
- Race or match weekend? Book the van and your hotel early, as both fill up
The way back follows the same rules. If you are heading home the morning after a race or a big match, expect the first stretch out of Buriram to be slow while everyone leaves at once, so pack water and snacks for the start of the trip.
Race weekends, return trips and staying a few days
On big race or match weekends, the roads into Buriram get busy and hotels fill up far in advance, so get your dates sorted early. A Van Pattaya to Buriram booking can be a simple one-way ride, a return on a later day, or a trip where the van stays with you for a weekend of circuit, stadium and temples. Return trips, waiting time and multi-day plans are all priced in chat before you go; you can sketch the stops on our trip planner first if that helps.
The fixed price for the whole vehicle is confirmed in chat before the trip, with tolls and fuel included. On a drive this long, the Toyota Commuter van makes a real difference: nine seats so nobody is squeezed, and room for eight bags plus flags, cool boxes and camera gear. If anyone in the group gets carsick, give them the front seat and plan a few extra breaks. You pay the driver in cash when you arrive.
