Van Pattaya to Cha-am

Cha-am is a quieter beach on the other side of the Gulf, just north of Hua Hin. It is a long drive from Pattaya, so make it the easy kind: one van, one stop, straight to your resort.

The beach Bangkok families escape to

Cha-am is a beach town in Phetchaburi province, on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, a short drive north of Hua Hin. It is a long, flat beach lined with casuarina trees, seafood restaurants and resorts, and it has long been a weekend getaway for Thai families from Bangkok. On a weekday it is calm and spacious; at the weekend the beachfront fills with deckchairs and picnics. If Pattaya has been lively, Cha-am is the slower counterpart.

Looking at a map, it seems close: Pattaya and Cha-am face each other across the water. But there is no road across the Gulf, so the trip goes up and around the top of the Gulf through Bangkok, then down the western coast.

Half a day on the road, broken up properly

Plan on about four to four and a half hours, more if Bangkok traffic is heavy when you pass through. That is a long time in a car, so the private van matters here. Everyone has a real seat, bags go in the back, and the driver stops when you want — usually once for toilets, coffee and something to eat, more often with small children. If you have never done the drive, it helps to leave mid-morning so you skip the worst of the Bangkok rush and still arrive in daylight.

  • Send the exact name of your resort or condo — Cha-am’s beach road is long
  • Ask for a stop in Phetchaburi town on the way if you want to see its hilltop palace
  • Pack snacks and water for the children, even with a rest stop planned
  • Going on to Hua Hin later in the trip? Mention it so we can quote both legs together
