An island where the road ends at a ferry
Koh Kret sits in a bend of the Chao Phraya River at Pak Kret, in Nonthaburi just north of Bangkok. It is home to a long-established Mon community known for its pottery, and the island is small enough to walk around or cycle in a few slow hours. Expect workshops where clay is still turned by hand, riverside temples, sweets and fried snacks sold from front porches, and the leaning white chedi that has become the island's postcard picture. Most visitors come for the terracotta pots, small clay cups and souvenirs, and for Mon-style snacks you will not easily find in central Bangkok.
There are no cars on the island. The van takes you to the ferry pier on the mainland side, you make the short crossing on the little boat, and the day continues on foot. That is part of the charm, and also the reason it matters where you are dropped.
Crossing Bangkok to reach the river
From Pattaya, Koh Kret is on the far side of the capital, so this is a longer ride than the run into central Bangkok. Plan on roughly three hours, with traffic deciding the rest. An early start helps twice: lighter roads, and cooler air for walking the island before midday. Depending on the hour, the route goes around or through the city, and your driver takes whichever way is moving best that morning.
A Van Pattaya to Koh Kret booking means one vehicle for the whole group: nine seats, tolls and fuel included, and no switching between buses, trains and boats with a family in tow. The fixed price for the whole vehicle is agreed in chat before the trip, and you pay the driver in cash afterwards.
- Weekends are livelier, with more food stalls; weekdays are quieter, so check what is running on your date
- Bring small cash for the ferry, snacks and pottery
- Wear comfortable shoes; the island paths are narrow and best on foot or bike
- Agree the pickup time at the pier before you cross
Turning one island into a full day
Many visitors pair the island with something else on the north side of the city, a riverside lunch, a mall, or a night in a Bangkok hotel before heading back to the coast, which also breaks the long drive into two shorter days. You can book a simple one-way van Pattaya to Koh Kret, keep the driver for the return, or build a route with several stops on our day trip planner. Return rides, waiting time and extra stops are all priced in chat before you go.
Whatever you choose, tell us roughly when you expect to be back at the pier. The driver will be on the mainland side when the ferry brings you over, and the pots you bought go straight into the back. A towel or a few sheets of newspaper in your day bag helps the fragile ones survive the trip home in one piece.
