Room for what you bring back
The trip home always carries more than the trip there. MBK Center is famous for exactly that effect: floor after floor of small shops selling phones and accessories, cameras, clothes, bags, shoes, souvenirs and everything in between, many of them happy to bargain. People come for one phone case and leave with a suitcase’s worth of gifts.
That is where a van earns its place. The Toyota Commuter has nine seats and room for eight bags, so the shopping goes in the back and nobody has a carrier bag on their lap for two hours. The van Pattaya to MBK Center price is ฿1,900 one way for the whole vehicle, with tolls and fuel included — our standard central-Bangkok fare. A couple shopping light can take a sedan from ฿1,200.
Where MBK sits in Siam
MBK is at the Pathum Wan junction, the western end of the Siam shopping district, with the National Stadium BTS station connected to the building and Siam Discovery and Siam Square just across the road. The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is on the opposite corner too. From Pattaya it is a two to two and a half hour drive, and the last part along the busy roads around Siam is the slowest.
Your driver drops you at an MBK entrance. For the pick-up, agree a time and a spot before you go in — the roads around Pathum Wan are busy and stopping is not allowed everywhere, so a clear meeting point saves a lot of walking with heavy bags.
- Bring cash for the smaller stalls; not every shop takes cards
- Check phones and electronics carefully before you pay, and keep the receipt
- Message your driver around twenty minutes before you are ready to leave
- Agree the pick-up entrance before you get out of the van
A long shopping day with one ride home
Some people do MBK in a morning; others add Siam Paragon, centralwOrld or the Pratunam markets and stay until dark. Either way, you have two options for getting back. Book a separate ride home at a fixed time, or ask for a same-day return with the same driver who waits for you. Waiting time, return trips and extra stops are all priced in chat before you go, so you know the total before you spend a single baht in the shops.
If you are staying the night in Bangkok, the driver can take you from MBK to your hotel instead — say so when you book. However you plan it, Van Pattaya to MBK Center is one fixed fare for the whole group, no deposit, and you pay the driver in cash after the ride. If you are mostly headed for the malls across the road, see Pattaya to Siam.
